Château Le Caillou is a small, 7-hectare vineyard run by the Giraud-Belivier family, who are experts in Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Average annual production is small, but what’s made is excellent-value Merlot-heavy claret that punches well above its price tag. At 13 years old, this is savoury and full-bodied, with notes of cedar and tobacco joining flavours of blackcurrant and plum. It has a subtle earthiness that’s great with mushroom-based vegetarian dishes or game.
