Kanonkop is named after a kopje (hillock) in the nearby Simonsberg mountains. But there is more than pretty landscapes to mark this Stellenbosch winery out as special. In the 1970s, Paul Sauer noted the site’s suitability for grape-growing and planted vineyards on the granite soils to great success. Now, Kanonkop’s flagship bottling – a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc – is one of South Africa’s most prestigious wines. Expect complex notes of blackcurrant, wildflowers and cigar box. Enjoy it with prime rib.
